In May, Guizhou’s Zunyi is lush with vitality in its kiwifruit orchards, where the fruits on the branches have just grown to the size of eggs and need several more months to ripen. At this time, the male flowers, a key "crop" related to kiwifruit yield, have quietly entered their peak harvest season. As a municipal-level leading agricultural enterprise and the largest kiwifruit pollen production base in Southwest China, Bohong Fruit Industry is seizing this critical agricultural period to fully promote the harvesting and standardized processing of male pollen, laying a solid foundation for the high-quality development of the regional kiwifruit industry.

Specializing in kiwifruit male plant cultivation and pollen production, Bohong Fruit Industry boasts unique industrial advantages. All its pollen is produced in a 40-hectare pure male orchard in Zunyi, Guizhou, and it also jointly operates 500 mu of male plant orchards in Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan, forming a large-scale and centralized planting pattern. To ensure pollen quality from the source, the company has carefully selected and planted a variety of high-quality male plant varieties, including Chieftain, Matua, Tumari, Ruixiong 609 and Zhengxiong 1, among which Tumari is an excellent variety widely promoted in Guizhou in recent years. Based on professional cultivation experience, it has formulated a special fertilization plan for kiwifruit male plants to provide sufficient nutrition, helping to produce pollen with higher activity and better quality.

Notably, all male plants of Bohong Fruit Industry are hexaploid (6x) with 6 sets of basic chromosomes, a unique feature that makes them highly adaptable. They can efficiently pollinate most mainstream kiwifruit varieties, such as Xuxiang, Ruiyu, Cuixiang, Hayward (6x), G3 Gold (4x), Donghong, Hongyang and R19 Red (2x), perfectly solving the problem of pollination adaptation for different varieties.

The company strictly controls every link from picking to processing to retain pollen activity. Workers start picking at 4 a.m. when the buds are plump, and all picked male flowers are processed on-site within hours. It has built a complete standardized production line with the world’s latest equipment, ensuring high extraction rate and cleanliness. The final pollen, with a purity of over 95% and germination rate of more than 70%, exceeds the first-class industry standard. Quality control runs through the whole process, and the pollen is sealed and frozen after processing to maintain activity.

Bohong’s standardized pollen not only solves the shortage of kiwifruit pollen in Guizhou but also reduces the risk of canker transmission caused by traditional pollination. It also brings practical benefits to growers by saving land, increasing yield and driving local employment. This year, its expected pollen output is 500 kg, and it plans to expand the output to over 1 ton within two years, continuously boosting the high-quality development of the kiwifruit industry in Southwest China.
